Babies born prematurely, in need of oxygen or medications, are taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) next to the Labor and Delivery Unit.
In the NICU, care is provided by physicians, physician assistants, nurses and respiratory therapists.
Each private and semi-private NICU room is large enough to accommodate several family members and a sleep area for a parent to stay close. Arrangements can be made for a separate sleep room that includes a bathroom and shower for parents of babies that remain in the NICU after the mother is discharged.
